WINDSURFING

Windsurfing is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. On longboards, upon which the sport was first popularized -sail areas and board lengths are typically larger and the athleticism required is much less. Windsurfing straddles both the laid-back culture of surf sports and the more rules-based environment of sailing. Windsurfing offers experiences that are outside the scope of other sailing craft designs. Windsurfers can perform jumps, inverted loops, spinning manoeuvres, and other "freestyle" moves that cannot be matched by any sailboat. Windsurfers were the first to ride the world's largest waves, such as Jaws on the island of Maui, and, with very few exceptions, it was not until the advent of tow-in surfing that waves of that size became accessible to surfers on more traditional surfboards. Extreme waves aside, many expert windsurfers will ride the same waves as surfers do .

Like any physical sport, you can't learn windsurfing without being in proper shape. However, being able to work the harness and all the equipment required to windsurf is a unique ability that separates it from other water sports. Arguably, it is not a particularly hard sport; it is just difficult to get your feet wet.

Control of the surfboard depends as much on the individual’s mastery of the wind and water as it does on the conditions. Windsurfing is a more adventurous sport than sailing, one that requires higher levels of physical fitness and agility. Windsurfer sails and tacks faster than a sailboat, and one can handle higher wind speeds and exotic manoeuvres like jumping, neither of which is possible on a sailboat.

Malé

Malé is the capital and most populous city in the Republic of Maldives. Traditionally it was the King's Island, from where the ancient royal dynasties ruled and where the palace was located. The city was then called Mahal. Formerly it was a walled city surrounded by fortifications and gates (doroshi). The Royal Palace (Gan'duvaru) was destroyed along with the picturesque forts (koshi) and bastions (buruzu) when the city was remodelled under
President Ibrahim Nasir's rule .

The town is built on a grid pattern (you can't get lost) and its narrow streets host a mix of shops, new and old apartment blocks, office buildings and motorcycle jams. Visitors should dress casual-conservatively. (Maldivian women's fashion ranges from burqas to jeans and free-flowing locks.) Male Island is intensively built-up — so densely stacked that you might expect it to sink under its own weight into its turquoise lagoon. A large dormitory suburb is being built on an adjacent artificial island and a kilometre-long, Chinese-built "friendship bridge" is under construction to neighbouring Hulhule Island international airport.
